Hilason vs Tough-1 Fly Sheet: Cost-Per-Summer Analysis

Tough-1 is the budget benchmark. The Air Mesh at $37 is the lowest-priced fly sheet from a recognized brand. The question is whether saving $20 to $25 over a Hilason is a smart move or a false economy. Here is the math, plus a side-by-side on what the extra $20 actually buys.

The Price Comparison

Sheet Sticker price Average lifespan (24/7 turnout) Cost per summer
Tough-1 Air Mesh $36.99 1 to 1.5 summers $25 to $37
Tough-1 Micro Mesh $52.76 1.5 to 2 summers $26 to $35
Tough-1 Zebra Mesh $31.96 to $52.76 1 to 1.5 summers $21 to $53
Hilason ADFS $59.95 3 to 4 summers $15 to $20

The Hilason ADFS is cheaper per summer than every Tough-1 model on the market. The sticker price is higher. The annual cost is lower.

This is the kind of math that does not show up on the product page. It shows up over three summers when you are buying your second Tough-1 and your Hilason is still going.

What the Extra $20 Buys

The sticker price difference between a Tough-1 Air Mesh and a Hilason ADFS is about $23. Here is what the $23 buys:

1. Reinforced shoulder panels (1200D vs no reinforcement). The Tough-1 has no reinforcement. The Hilason has 1200D panels at the highest-stress area. This is the difference between a sheet that fails at month 4 and a sheet that holds up to month 36.

2. UPF 50+ UV protection vs unspecified UV protection. The Tough-1 does not advertise a UPF rating. The Hilason ADFS is UPF 50+ certified. For UV-sensitive horses, this is the difference between a faded coat in September and a dark coat in September.

3. Double-buckle front closure vs single buckle. The Hilason has a double-buckle system that does not pop open when a horse rolls. The Tough-1 has a single buckle. Horses that roll regularly will pop a Tough-1 buckle within a few months.

4. Replaceable leg straps vs non-replaceable. The Hilason sells replacement leg straps for $8 plus shipping. The Tough-1 has non-replaceable leg straps. When they fail, you replace the whole sheet.

5. Three to four summer lifespan vs one to two summer lifespan. This is the cost-per-summer math above.

The UV Protection Gap

This is worth expanding on. The Tough-1 mesh is light and breathable. It will physically block flies. It will not block 98% of UV.

The Hilason ADFS mesh is UPF 50+ certified, which is the highest rating for sun-protective fabric. Independent tests show 98% of UV is blocked.

For a chestnut or a bay with a dark coat, the Tough-1 will let through enough UV to fade the coat over a single summer. The Hilason will keep the coat dark.

If you are showing your horse in a halter or underhand class, coat fade matters. The $23 you save on a Tough-1 is not worth a faded coat at the state fair.

When the Tough-1 is the Right Answer

We are not anti-Tough-1. There are real use cases where the Tough-1 is the better choice:

  • Young horse that will outgrow the sheet. A young horse will outgrow a fly sheet in 18 months. Buy the $37 Tough-1. Replace it. Move on.
  • Temporary horse. A summer lease, a rescue, a horse you are evaluating. The Tough-1 is a perfectly good short-term sheet.
  • Horse that destroys sheets. Some horses are sheet destroyers. Buy the Tough-1. When it fails, you are out $37, not $60.
  • Strict budget. If the difference between a $37 sheet and a $60 sheet is the difference between a sheet and no sheet, buy the Tough-1. A $37 sheet that gets worn for one summer is better than no sheet at all.

When the Hilason is the Right Answer

  • You want a sheet that lasts three to four summers
  • UV protection matters to you
  • You have a quarter horse or paint in 24/7 turnout
  • You want replaceable parts

FAQ

Is the Tough-1 Air Mesh the same quality as the Hilason? No. Different mesh weight, different construction, different price. The Tough-1 is a budget sheet. The Hilason is a mid-tier work sheet. Both will do the job. The Hilason will do the job longer.

Does the Tough-1 Zebra Mesh really repel flies? The theory is that flies have difficulty landing on the striped pattern. The evidence is mostly anecdotal. We have not seen a significant difference in fly load between zebra-striped and white sheets in field testing.

Can I add leg straps to a Tough-1? Not easily. The leg straps are sewn in. If they fail, the sheet is done. The Hilason sells replacement leg straps for $8 plus shipping.

Is the Tough-1 mesh breathable? Yes. It is a knit mesh that allows airflow. The mesh is lighter than the Hilason, so it is slightly cooler. The trade-off is durability and UV protection.

What is the warranty on each? Tough-1 has a manufacturer defect warranty through the retailer. Hilason has a 30-day return policy with full refund and a repair program for out-of-warranty damage.
