Hilason vs Professional's Choice Fly Sheet: Fit Engineering Compared

Professional's Choice came from the sports medicine world, and the engineering focus in their fly sheets is on fit and movement. The Comfort-Fit line has stretch panels, fleece at the withers, and the West Coast belly surcingle that holds the sheet in place during work. Here is how that engineering compares to the Hilason ADFS.

The Two Design Philosophies

Design element Hilason ADFS Professional's Choice Comfort-Fit
Construction priority Reinforced stress points (shoulders, withers, leg strap attachments) Fit and movement (jersey mesh spine, fleece withers, stretch panels)
Best for 24/7 turnout, hard use Performance horses, mixed use, riding in fly sheet
Mesh 600D body / 1200D reinforced shoulders Polyester ripstop with stretch jersey spine
Front closure Double buckle Standard buckle with nylon lining at chest
Wither protection Gusset system Fleece lining
Belly surcingle Traditional, lower position West Coast style (higher on sides)
UV protection UPF 50+ (98% block) UV-protective, ~80 to 90% range
Starting price $59.95 $80 to $100

The West Coast Belly Surcingle

This is the most distinctive Professional's Choice feature. The belly surcingles attach further up the sides of the sheet, which keeps the sheet from shifting during work. If you ride your horse in a fly sheet (some people do for trail riding in heavy fly pressure), this is a meaningful feature.

The Hilason uses a more traditional lower-positioned surcingle. The sheet stays in place for turnout, but if you are doing trot-canter transitions in a fly sheet, the Professional's Choice will hold position better.

The Jersey Mesh Spine

The Comfort-Fit has a stretch jersey mesh panel along the spine. This is a flexible material that moves with the horse's back as the back flexes and extends. If you have a horse with a sensitive back or a horse that objects to the pressure of a standard fly sheet at the spine, the Comfort-Fit is the better-engineered sheet.

The Hilason ADFS does not have a stretch spine panel. The mesh is consistent across the body. For most horses, this is fine. For horses with back sensitivity, the Professional's Choice is the better answer.

The Reinforced Shoulders vs The Fleece Withers

These are two different solutions to two different problems.

Hilason ADFS reinforced shoulders (1200D): The 1200D panels at the shoulder prevent tears at the highest-stress point. This is a durability feature. The sheet will not tear at the shoulder after a year of 24/7 turnout.

Professional's Choice fleece withers: The fleece lining at the withers prevents rubs at the wither. This is a comfort feature. The sheet will not rub a raw spot on a horse with prominent withers.

The right answer depends on your horse. A horse that rubs at the withers needs the Professional's Choice. A horse that tears sheets at the shoulder needs the Hilason. A horse that does neither will be fine in either.

UV Protection

The Hilason ADFS is UPF 50+ certified (98% UV block). The Professional's Choice is UV-protective but the specific UPF rating is in the 80 to 90% range and varies by model. For UV-sensitive horses, the Hilason is the better choice.

When to Choose Each

Choose Professional's Choice Comfort-Fit when:

  • You have a horse with a sensitive back
  • You ride in your fly sheet
  • Your horse rubs at the withers
  • You have a warmblood or draft cross with a big-bodied build
  • Fit engineering matters more than UV protection

Choose Hilason ADFS when:

  • You have a quarter horse or paint in 24/7 turnout
  • UV protection is a priority
  • You need reinforced shoulders for hard use
  • You want the best price
  • You are outfitting multiple horses

FAQ

Is the Professional's Choice Comfort-Fit worth the extra $20 to $40 over the Hilason? For a horse that needs the stretch spine, the fleece withers, or the West Coast surcingle, yes. For a standard quarter horse, no. The features that justify the premium do not matter on a horse that does not need them.

Can I ride in a Hilason ADFS? Yes, but the sheet will shift more than a Professional's Choice with the West Coast surcingle. If you regularly ride in a fly sheet, the Professional's Choice is the better-engineered option.

Does the Professional's Choice come with a neck cover? No. The standard and Comfort-Fit do not include a neck cover. You buy the neck cover separately. The Hilason ADFS-NF is a $72 sheet that includes a neck cover, which is less than a Professional's Choice Comfort-Fit plus a separate neck cover.

Which sheet holds up better in 24/7 turnout? The Hilason. The 1200D reinforced shoulder panels are designed for continuous wear. The Professional's Choice Comfort-Fit is a slightly lighter construction optimized for fit and movement, not for hard turnout.

Can I add the West Coast surcingle to a Hilason? No. The surcingle position is a design feature of the sheet, not an add-on. If you need the West Coast surcingle, buy the Professional's Choice.
